Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
- Most all treatment of periodontal diseases begin with
non-surgical therapy or attempts to "disinfect" the periodontal pocket.
- Non-surgical periodontal therapy generally refers to those
procedures designed at attempting to resolve the infection of the
periodontium.
- The most common periodontal procedure recommend is known as
Scaling and Root Planeing or SRP. Basically, the gums are anesthetized, and
using ultrasonic and hand instruments therapy aimed at removing plaque and
calculus underneath the gum are implemented.
- Sometimes, SRP is supplemented by systemic
antibiotics to help resolve the bacterial infection. Most of these
antibiotics are aimed specifically at the types of bacteria thought most
responsible for periodontal disease.
- Other forms of non-surgical therapy involve placing locally
delivered antimicrobials directly in the periodontal pocket to augment the
effects of SRP.
